During the colonial period, rulers assessed their wealth based on the value of these gems, utilizing them both as symbols of status and as valuable commodities in social and economic exchanges. Adorning themselves with these gems, they sought to captivate the world and win hearts.
This tradition dates back to the era of Buddha and extends through the times of emperors and kings, evident in the ruins and scripts that dot the landscape of this island nation.
Even today, two-thirds of Sri Lanka's land area is rich with gemstones. Rathnapura stands out as the most prominent location for gem mining, followed by places like Alahera, Mathale, Naula, Bakamuna, Rakwana, Kalawana, and Balangoda, where these precious stones have been discovered since ancient times.
